Interdisciplinary Event at Joliet Junior College BY: Mariel and Shanna 1216 Houbolt Rd Joliet, IL 60431-8311 (815) 729-9020

We feel this field trip will be very beneficial to the third graders at Creekside Elementary, as it incorporates specific science and social studies concepts they will be discussing during the year. This trip also includes other disciplines as well such as art, physical education, and writing as a follow up. The JJC campus provides many free activities, which allows for a very packed day full of activities related to many different subjects.

Trackman Planetarium Trackman planetarium is in the F- Building on the Main Campus of JJC. The Trackman Planetarium uses the Spitz System 512 planetarium projector and a computer- controlled, multimedia automation video projection system. Grade school and high school groups are encouraged to schedule special programs that may be presented during the school day. These free, public service programs are tailored to the grade level and content of the students attending the program.

Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery The Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery is located on the second floor of J-Building. The gallery houses many different types of professional and student art work and often houses exhibitions for artists. All exhibitions and related activities are free and open to the public. The gallery is open to the public from 8:00 am - 8:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and is always free.

Dr. William M. Zales Arboretum and Nature Trails The arboretum is a place where woody plants, trees, shrubs, and vines are grown for exhibition and study. The 11-acre Joliet Junior College Arboretum is located on JJC's 368-acre Main Campus, adjacent to the main gate. One can also explore the self- guided prairie and forest trails on Joliet Junior College’s Main Campus. There are many landmarks along the trail which point out habitat and wildlife information. Both are open to the public from dawn till dusk.

Cronin School House The Cronin Schoolhouse was built in 1863, the authentic one- room country school is a living history museum. The Larkin family donated the school house to the JJC Foundation in 1987. Since 1991, thousands of school and community groups have visited the one-room schoolhouse. The Cronin Schoolhouse is open year- round and offers tours by appointment.

There are132 students in the 3 rd grade at Creekside. And six 3 rd grade teachers. We will be breaking the third graders up into six groups of 22. One teacher will be assigned to each group. We will need 12 parent volunteers (about two per classroom). So including the teacher there will be 3 chaperones for each group of 22 leaving the student to chaperone ratio at 7:1. Teachers will take on the extra student and will have a teacher to student ratio of 8:1.

Cost per bus $72.97 X 3 218.91 Cost per hour $36.48 X 6 $218.88 Cost per mile 12.17 X 0.96 $11.68 Cost per trip $11.68 X 2 $23.37 218.91 218.88 + 23.37 $461.16 Cost per Student $461.16 ÷ 132 = $3.49 Rounded to: $5.00 *Special Note: $5 - $3.49 = $1.51; 61 X $1.51 = $92.11; $92.11÷ $3.49 = 26 extra students

 Groups will all be assigned a letter and will switch activities according to the group schedule.  Activities are designed in hour blocks, 50 minutes to dedicate to the activity and 10 minutes to travel to the next activity.  We will leave Creekside at 9:20 and will be ready for our first activities at JJC by 10 AM.  Then groups will follow the schedule to their different actives for the four hours we are at JJC. Students will need a sack lunch and will be scheduled a lunch break.  We will complete our last activity at 1:50 and busses will depart at 2:15, providing time for bathroom breaks and attendance. Student will arrive back in their classrooms by 3:00, and dismissal will be at 3:40.
