The University of Aveiro A two-fold approach was implemented –Internal: institutional priorities and goals –External: a governance structure that connects the university with its publics A strategic planning model was the vehicle for connecting the internal and external environments (stakeholders)

4. Internal Strategy Implement a strategic planning process –Agreement on mission –External perspective and vision –Focus on priorities –Increased communication –Better framework for decision-making –A positive and proactive university image

Strategic Planning Internal institutional examination External environmental scan Seek institutional input and involvement Set priorities and goals Develop an action plan for each goal Establish a shared, participatory process Share planning with external stakeholders Continually evaluate the process

6. External Strategy Change the university governance structure –University Board of Advisors Statutes must be changed The Board’s role must be clearly defined Interface the internal and external environments (stakeholders) through the strategic plan. –This is the Board of Advisors’ “manual”
