Agenda4/24 Carbon Cycle / Notes #5 Practice
6
CH 8 Notes #4 Carbon Cycle Community: a group of living things interacting with each other Ecosystem: A community of organisms interacting with the environment
7
Ecosystems are made of two parts: biotic and abiotic Biotic = parts of the environment that are living Ex: birds, grass, insects, bacteria Abiotic = parts of the environment that are non-living. Ex: rocks, water, soil, air, sunlight
8
Energy flow As plants and animals break down the bonds in food some of the energy held in the bonds gets released into the environment
9
Energy in an ecosystem can change forms and may move into or out of a particular ecosystem
10
KEY CONCEPT: Matter and energy cycle through the biotic and abiotic parts of the ecosystem. ***THIS MEANS THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF MATTER DOES NOT GO UP OR DOWN, IT JUST CHANGES TYPES***
11
The Carbon Cycle Process of carbon moving from the environment into organisms and back Importance: life on earth is carbon based meaning all living things are made of carbon
12
THE CARBON CYCLE
13
A trip through the carbon cycle A. Through photosynthesis, plants & algae add O 2 to the atmosphere and remove CO 2 (turned into glucose)
14
B. When animals eat plants & algae, the glucose in the plants becomes part of them
15
C. During respiration, organisms return CO 2 to the atmosphere (made when glucose breaks down) – Remember: Plants & algae make their own glucose, animals get glucose from the organisms they eat!
16
D. Decomposers: organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms – Note: Bacteria worms, insects & fungi also break down plant & animal waste
17
Decomposers release CO 2 into the atmosphere and other chemicals into the earth. Fossil fuels: natural fuels made from decomposed dead organisms in the earth – Examples: coal = dead plants buried & heated for millions of years
18
E. Combustion: burning living plants or fossil fuels for energy, releasing CO 2 into the atmosphere Examples: burning wood, coal, oil
19
F. Carbon atoms in the atmosphere/earth can become a part of plants or algae again, starting the cycle over
