4. Setting Many components determine setting such as: time, place, and weather.

5. Plot is the order of events; the timeline of the story!

6. 1 st person – The narrator is a character in the text. “I first…” 2 nd person – Usually is a how- to text. “First you preheat the oven to 375 degrees…” 3 rd person – The narrator is generally outside the text. “First he opened the refrigerator…”

7. Notice the similarity of the following: I 1 Thus, I = 1 st person!

8. TRUE! nervous, very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why WILL you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses, not destroyed, not dulled them. Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How then am I mad? Hearken! and observe how healthily, how calmly, I can tell you the whole story.

9. When the three days were over the marriage was celebrated. It was a magnificent ceremony, and the bride and bridegroom walked hand in hand under a canopy of purple velvet embroidered with little pearls. Then there was a State Banquet, which lasted for five hours. The Prince and Princess sat at the top of the Great Hall and drank out of a cup of clear crystal. Only true lovers could drink out of this cup, for if false lips touched it, it grew grey and dull and cloudy.

10. Theme can be considered the lesson, moral, or message of the story. Think universally! Nearly everyone can relate to themes of love, jealousy, and honesty.
