The Science of Physics
3
What is Physics? Physics is one of the natural sciences: BiologyGeologyBotany ChemistryAstronomyPaleontology PhysicsZoology Physics is sometimes called “the fundamental science” because it explains all other sciences! Definition of Physics: Physics is the science that studies matter, energy, and space, and their fundamental interactions through time.
4
What is the Goal of Physics? The goal of physics is to use a small number of basic ideas to describe and understand the physical world We call these ideas physical principles and we use them to help us live better lives – Inventions (machines, devices, motors, tools) – New Technologies (lasers, electronics, space flight) – Engineering (cell phones, computers, cars, buildings)
5
We are surrounded by principles of physics, every day, all the time Physics deals with everyday things such as: – motion – size & shape – forces – temperature – color
6
Physics explores topics such as: MotionFluidsLight ForceHeatElectricity EnergySoundMagnetism This semester we will study: – Motion: 1D, 2D, and Circular – Forces: types of forces, free-body diagrams, laws of motion, and force equilibrium – Energy: work, kinetic energy, potential energy, conservation of energy, and power – Linear Momentum: impulse, conservation of momentum, and collisions
7
Next semester we will study: – More Motion (rotational and simple harmonic) – Waves (mechanical waves, including sound) – Introduction to Electricity (including basic circuits) YOUR FIRST PHYSICS ASSIGNMENT: – Pick a physics topic you know something about – Write a two-paragraph mini-essay in which you: 1 st Pgh: Tell me what you already know about the topic. 2 nd Pgh: Tell me what you would like to learn about it. – It can be typed or written, but it must be clear and proof-read by you and some one else – Make sure you read what you write! Make it clear!
