Who isn’t interested in stopping deforestation? What might happen if we/they tried to impose things like National Parks on the areas where mining and cocaine are the cause of the deforestation?

4. Sustainable management of TRFs needs to be realistic... The management ideas in the textbooks suggest that we all want to save the forest.. And no one will object to these lovely ideas… Why are most of them not bad ideas… but… not going to solve the problem because of the needs and wants of the people living and working there?

5. Tropical Rainforest Management Tropical rainforests are being managed in different ways. One way is for the government of countries to take control of their forest areas. Another was is for non- governmental organisations (NGOs) to help local communities in rainforest areas. Your task today is to make a revision card to summarise rainforest management schemes

(6)” Think about – The reasons why the TRF are being destroyed and why this is a global issue (e.g. People in country X might demand products such as timber, paper, iron etc which are found in TRFs) Why some people may not want to stop cutting down TRFs. How people in distant locations can have an impact on what goes on in the rainforest – either for the better or worse (think about supply and demand)

10. Plenary/High End Questions.. Should Equador be paid by all of us not to use the TRF? What if nothing gets done? Have any of the ideas you have looked at today been realistic considering peoples needs? What do you think the situation will be in 30 years time?
