1 France in the New World France became envious of the wealth and possessions acquired by Spain and Portugal. She therefore financed a number of expeditions to explore the “New World.”

2 Motives for French Exploration 1. Northwest Passage - (France hoped to find a passage to the Indies through the New World) – (Gold) 1. Empire - Build overseas empire based on fur trade and fishing. (Glory) 1. Religion - Convert Native Americans to Catholic Religion. (God)

5 French Explorers  M M M Marquette & Joliet Explored Central Mississippi River (1673).

6 French Explorers  R R R Robert de la Salle Sailed Entire Mississippi River and named the area Louisiana (1682).

7 The French Empire in America As a result of her exploration, France claimed Canada, the Great Lakes region, and the Mississippi River Valley. Control of the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River and the Mississippi River System gave France a natural highway to the interior (inside) of North America.

10 The Dutch in the New World In 1581, the Dutch took steps to obtain a share of the rich trade with the Far East. In 1609, a group of Dutch Merchants hired Henry Hudson to find a northwest passage.

11 The Dutch in the New World  I I I In his vessel, the Half Moon, Hudson explored the coast from Maine to Carolina, discovering Delaware Bay and the Hudson River (1609). HHHHe sailed up the river as far as present day Albany.
