How Crater Lake was made Crater Lake’s caldera was created by a massive volcano eruption of Mount Mazama which caused the volcano’s walls to collapse and created a crater about 4,000 feet deep were the mountain had once stood.

Another name for Crater Lake Crater Lake is also known for the “Old man of the lake’’, a full sized tree, but now only a stump,which has been bobbing vertically in the water for over a hundred years.

Visiting Crater Lake Crater Lake is a great place to visit, offering hiking trails, camping, and boat tours around the lake and to Wizard island where you can get off and explore.

Crater Lake is lots and lots of things to do. Go visit, and have fun. Mount Mazama when erupting Mount Mazama erupted 7,700 years ago. Lava eruptions later created a central platform which is now known as Wizard Island which still sits in the middle of Crater Lake. Eventually, the caldera cooled, allowing rain and snow to accumulate and form the lake. It is estimated that it took 720 years to fill the lake to its present depth.
