2 Figurative Language Objectives: We will be able to identify and use figurative language in our reading and writing. We will be able to differentiate between the different types of figurative language.

3 What is figurative language Mrs. Heady?  I’m so glad you asked that question!!!  Figurative language is a tool that an author employs (or uses) to help the reader visualize (or see) what is happening in a story or poem. Some common types of figurative language are: simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, idiom, puns, and sensory language.

4 Simile  A SIMILE is a figure of speech where X is compared to Y, using the words AS or LIKE.  For example,  You are as pretty as a budding lilac.

5 Metaphor  A METAPHOR is a figure of speech where X is compared to Y, and where X is said TO BE Y. A METAPHOR says that X IS Y.  For example,  Sara is as happy as a lark.

6 Personification  Personification is when something that is not human becomes human.  For example…a talking pig!!!!  Charlotte’s Web  Beauty and the Beast

7 Alliteration  Alliteration is when the first letter in a word is repeated in several words.  For example,  Angela Abigail Applewhite ate anchovies and artichokes.  Bertha Bartholomew blew big, blue bubbles.  Dwayne Dwiddle drew a drawing of dreaded Dracula.  Greta Gruber grabbed a group of green grapes.

8 Onomatopoeia  An onomatopoeia is a word or a grouping of words that imitates the sound it is describing. word  For example,  Oink  Clank  Boom

9 Hyperbole  A hyperbole is an exaggeration. It is often confused with a simile or a metaphor because it often compares two objects.  For example:  His feet were as big as a barge.  I nearly died laughing.  I tried a thousand times.

10 Puns  A pun is a phrase that’s funny. phrase  For example,  I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me.  Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now.  I couldn't quite remember how to throw a boomerang, but eventually it came back to me.

11 Idioms  a phrase that does not make any literal sense. phrase  For example:  Get your mind out of the gutter.  A Blessing In Disguise.  A Chip On Your Shoulder.  A Dime A Dozen.  A Doubting Thomas.

14 Activity  With you peer buddy, you will be assigned a type of figurative language. You will create examples of your figurative language and share them with the class.
