2. The purposes of my project: 1. to classify idioms; 2. to study the problem of the translation of idioms; 3. to understand the aim of the modern usage of idioms; 4. to study different kinds of idioms related to food.

3. What is an idiom?  Idiom – a group of words that have a different meaning when used together from the one they have when used separately.

Ways of classification of idioms. idioms connected with animals the division based on different sides of life - relationships, emotions, work or studying. phrases connected with food expressions connected with common nouns such as ‘life’, ‘death’ or ‘love’ idioms connected with parts of body all the idiomatic phrases are divided into groups according to the relation to various topics.

6. As cool as a cucumber. Very calm, not nervous or emotional Спокойный как слон Roslyn was as cool as a cucumber when he got the award from the President of the USA.

7. Top banana The chief person in a group Хозяин положения Who is the top banana in this outfit?

8. A couch potato Someone who always sits in front of TV, and is not engaged (or almost not engaged) physical activity Домосед My roommate is such a couch potato - last weekend he watched television for 14 hours straight!

9. Bad apple. "Bad people", the one who has constant problems with the law, a troublemaker Преступник, плохой (негативный) человек A bad apple spoils the whole basket (saying).

10. Egg-head A very studious and academic person Умник My friend IS egg-head.

My grandparents always used the carrot-and-stick approach for my parents. But now my mum and dad are rather liberal with my younger brother and me.
