Computer Use Best Practices Basic Teaching Guidelines for computing in the 21st century

Purpose The purpose of this presentation is to offer teachers some very basic technology Guidelines to promote safe and productive Computer use

Student expectations Computers are intended for School Work Surfing the internet for one’s personal interests should not be permitted continually remind students that they should be doing exactly what is asked of them with the computer and monitor this behavior

Recommendations for the web preview sites you want your students to use for research Place links to the sites in the shared folders or on your teacher page or wiki Use Netrekker to find student appropriate sites Make it the exception that students go on sites that you have not previewed

Consistent Consequences If a student uses his/her computer account inappropriately, there needs to be time off of the computer Time off will vary based on what the student was doing and of course, grade level but there must be a consequence every time. If a student is removed from the computer, He/She should be given work to do with paper and pencil students will learn quickly that they must be on task or they will be off the computer

Laptops and Mini labs students should not be left unattended at any time Use Parents or aides in mini labs in the hall or labs off of the classrooms as much as possible Laptops in classrooms should be facing toward a teacher so he/she can view screens Students should be assigned the same computer each time it is used Students should work in groups as much as possible

Caution for Teachers If you open a site on your computer that is blocked, be sure to quit your browser when you are done. You cannot unblock sites for students do not let students on your computer Under your login do not share any passwords with students or substitutes When a substitute is in the classroom, consider not utilizing the computers for that period of time

Credits Slideshow created by Joan Thompson, ETS @ MPES Edited and additions made by Sam Thompson, ITC @ PCSD This slideshow is intended for teachers, but the information therein is NOT policy and should be used accordingly in each educational setting.

Questions to ponder Should we have computers outside of the classroom or lab? Should systems shut off and lock up after a certain time in the afternoon? Can a teacher decide to remove access (computer login) for a student or should an building administrator/counselor do it? Should we not allow students to use a teacher machine, even if under their login?
