6
The area a designer works with.
7
Fill the space Add positive space OR Leave much of it empty Accept the negative space
8
Fill the space…
9
Leave it empty…
10
Negative Space Empty space EXAMPLE: the area under the desk To much empty space makes a person feel uncomfortable
11
Positive Space Filled space EXAMPLE: the desk All rooms should have a balance of both positive and negative space.
12
Positive space: space that is filled with color, texture, form, or mass. This could be walls, furnishings, art, area rugs, or even graphics or scenes painted on walls. Negative space: The empty space surrounding the positive space-the windows between works or art, the space between furniture pieces, or even the cubic footage.
13
The positive and negative space should be balanced in amount and placement. Although, some areas are primarily positive space or primarily negative space.
14
Allow large openings between rooms so the eye can travel to adjacent rooms.
15
Use light, cool colors.
16
Use small furniture, patterns, and textures.
17
Place large furniture parallel to walls so they dont break the space into smaller segments.
18
Use minimal furnishings and accessories.
19
Allow for empty space between furniture or on walls.
20
Place lighting around the outside of the room.
21
Large, open spaces give many people a feeling of freedom and luxury. Too much empty space can make someone feel lonely and uncomfortable Well designed small spaces can make people feel snug and secure. Uncomfortable small spaces give a feeling of confinement.
22
Place furniture perpendicular to walls as room dividers.
23
Use warm, dark colors.
24
Use contrasting patterns, colors, and textures.
25
Use texture- rough textures absorb sound and make the room feel private and intimate.
26
Use furniture of different heights to break a long, unobstructed view.
27
Group furniture according to areas of activity.
28
Use large furniture that sits directly on the floor.
33
Cut a shape from a half sheet of black paper. Then cut that shape into at least 9 more pieces. Reform the pieces of your shape onto a white piece of paper to reflect positive and negative space. Experiment with different amounts of space. Glue the pieces down after deciding on the most pleasing arrangement. Create a portfolio page with this design. Your description will include what part of your picture is positive space and which part is negative, as well as an explanation of why the new design is more interesting than the original shape you started with.
37
Find pictures in magazines of pictures that represent rooms with: Positive Space Negative Space Title the two pages Positive Space and Negative Space In your description, include the feelings the space might make one feel as well as the influence it makes on how the size of the room feels.
