Case Study: Electronic Publishing Support Service at UiB Gaëlle Bozec Bergen University Library, Norway

Background information University of Bergen: 17000 students, 2500 faculty and staff, 90 different specialised departments, centres and institutes. UiB was created in 1946. There are only 4 universities in Norway. University Library of Bergen: 7 libraries, 130 staff; 1,7 mill. books and periodicals. Budget: ca. 12 mill. $ STEP (Electronic Publishing Support service): 1 staff, created in 2001 as a pilot-project

The past: 1996/2000: Forskdok was a project that tried to digitized whatever could be digitized (mainly text) 2001: STEP (Electronic Publishing support Service) was created by the Bergen University Library. The aim of the project is to help graduating students in order to produce electronic theses.

The present: STEP offer courses and on-line support to graduating students. The 3-hours course explain: - the use of EndNote - what metadata are - how to use stylesheets - what is the benefit of electronic pubblishing - how to digitize pictures After the course, STEP can be contacted for more explanations or more help

The future: 2 of the 7 faculties at the University of Bergen have made the delivery of electronic theses compulsary started on August, 1st 2004 STEP (Electronic Publishing Support Service) will become a permanent unit within the University Library DSpace has been implented since March, 1st (with good help of the University Library of Glasgow) University of Makerere (Uganda) is one of our ”early adopters” using DSpace
