“Let me tell you what is coming. After the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands lives you may win southern independence, but I doubt it. The North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche.” -Governor Samuel Houston of Texas QUOTE 1

I think this quote means, no matter how strong the Confederate is the North is much stronger and more determined. In the end the North will win the Civil War. WHAT I THINK IT MEANS AND WHY IT IS SIGNIFICANT I think this is significant because Governor Sam is the Governor of Texas. Texas is a confederate state. But Sam sounds like he believes that the union is more passionate and will be stronger then the South.

“No man is govern another man without that other’s consent.” -Abraham Lincoln QUOTE 2 (This picture was taken December 20,1863 When Lincoln had no beard.)

I think this quote means that slavery was wrong, because a man doesn’t have the right to own another man’s life. WHAT I THINK IT MEANS AND IT IS SIGNIFICANCE I think this quote is significance because it is against slavery. No one should own any one without their consent.

“Viewing the man from the genuine abolitionist ground, Mr. Lincoln seemed cold, tardy, weak and unequal to the task. But, viewing him from the sentiments of his people, which as a statesman he was bound to respect, then his actions were swift, bold, radical, and decisive. Taking the man in the whole, balancing the tremendous magnitude of the situation, and necessary means to ends, infinite wisdom has rarely sent a man into the world more perfectly suited to his mission than Abraham Lincoln.” -Frederick Douglass QUOTE 3

I think this quote meant some people saw Lincoln’s actions as unequal and weak. But others saw his actions as swift and bold. In the end, Frederick felt due to the great importance of the situation, Lincoln was the best man for the job. WHAT I THINK IT MEANS AND WHY IT IS SIGNIFICANCE I think this Quote is significance because Fredrick Douglass is trying to make people believe Lincoln is not a perfect guy and was doing his best.

“Don’t infer with anything with the Constitution that it must be maintained for it is the only safe guard of are liberties.” -Abraham Lincoln QUOTE 4

I think this quote means that the constitution is all encompassing of our freedom's. It also states that it keeps things fair and safe guard’s our liberties. WHAT I THINK IT MEANS AND WHY IT IS SIGNIFICANCE I think this quote is significant because it is saying do not mess with something that is trying to keep peoples freedom and liberties safe.

“America has no north, no south, no east, no west. The sun rises over the hills and sets over the mountains, the compass just points up and down, and we can laugh now at the absurd notion of there being a north and south. We are now one and undivided.” -Sam Watkins - 1 st Tennessee QUOTE 5

I think this Quote means that it is funny when you look back at all we went through with a war and we were against our own people. The north and south almost became their own country, when we probably could have just compromised. WHAT I THINK IT MEANS AND WHY IT IS SIGNIFICANCE I think the significance is that there really is no north and south. That there are hills and mountains in this world. We are all one and undivided.
