Attitudes toward Death Some deny the reality of death. Some fear death so they avoid all mention of it. Some don’t care- let’s eat drink and be merry. Others curse God who would allow it. Others in despair commit suicide. What is your attitude toward death? Are you prepared for it? A lot will depend on your attitude towards God & the application of God’s word in your life.
4
Why must we physically die? “ J (Romans 5:12) “ Just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin.” (Romans 5:12) Adam & Eve understood the command to not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil or they would die. (Genesis 2:16-17; 3:3) But the serpent deceived Eve into eating while Adam listened to his wife and ate also. (Genesis 3:4-6) But the serpent deceived Eve into eating while Adam listened to his wife and ate also. (Genesis 3:4-6)
5
All of mankind suffers death because of the sins of Adam and Eve.” (Genesis 3:17) Many are afraid of death and may try to hide from God as Adam and Eve had done but the reality is that “you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Genesis 3:17) All of mankind suffers the consequences of physical death as a result of their disobedience to God but we do not inherit their sin or guilt. (Ezekiel 18:20)
6
The descendants of Adam (Gen. 5) Adam…lived 930 years and he died Seth…912 years and he died Enosh 905 years and he died Kenan 910 years and he died Mahalalel 895 years and he died Jared 962 years and he died Methuselah 969 years and he died They all lived a long time… but they all died!
7
When did Adam die? “The Lord God commanded the man, saying, from any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die”. (Gen. 3:17) But he didn’t die physically that day. No, but he died spiritually, which separated him from God whereby he was driven out of the garden of Eden along with Eve because God cannot have fellowship with sin. (Gen. 3:24)
8
Our sins separate us from God “Behold, the LORD'S hand is not so short That it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.” (Isaiah 59:2) The day that you sin, you separate yourself from having fellowship with God.
9
God will not tempt you to sin and you cannot blame Him for it “Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when and.” (James 1:13-14) “Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.” (James 1:13-14)
10
Don’t be deceived: Your sin brings death “Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.” “Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.” (James 1:15-16)
11
You can be physically alive and yet spiritually dead because of your sins “And you were, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.” (Eph. 2:1-3)
12
If you physically die in your sins, you will suffer the second death in torment "But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in brimstone, which is the second death." (Revelation 21:8) "But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." (Revelation 21:8)
13
But Because of God’s Love, we don’t have to perish "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
14
We can only be saved from God’s wrath (second death) through Jesus Christ “ “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.” (Romans 5:8-9)
15
We don’t have to fear death, because Jesus Christ overcame the devil “Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham.” (Hebrews 2:14-16)
16
You must be baptized into His death so that you might rise to walk in newness of life “Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:3-4)
17
We are now dead to sin & alive to God “Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 6:8-11)
18
Therefore we present our bodies as instruments of righteousness, not sin “Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” (Romans 6:12-14)
19
The spiritually dead can hear the word of God and live today "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. "For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. (John 5:25-27)
20
After you die, you will be judged by your deeds (too late to change) "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. (John 5:28-29)
21
Conclusion Don’t deny the reality of death. Don’t curse God, who sent His son to die for your sins. Don’t say, ‘let’s eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die anyway’. Don’t ever think that God doesn’t love you that you would ever consider committing suicide. Do you fear death? You don’t have to because Jesus overcame the devil (who has the power of death).
22
Are You Ready for the Judgment Day? ) “And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.” (Hebrews 9:27-28) If you are unprepared, obey the gospel or be restored today!
