Different Kinds of Elections
Primary Elections – used to select the candidates to run for the party General Elections – used to select the candidate that will fill the position Mandate – a vote of confidence for the candidate that a majority of the American people support their platform Initiatives allow citizens to propose legislation and submit it to popular vote Referendum - allows the legislature to submit proposed legislation for popular approval Recall elections allow citizens to remove someone from office

Presidential Selection Method
Heavily influenced by political parties (informal amendment) In a constant state of change Allows for the selection of the “brightest and the best” Made up of three phases V.

Phase One End of previous election to 3 month before next
Candidates emerge from within the parties to “test the water” and begin fundraising. Parties make a “call” for their convention (announce date and location of their nominating convention, and assign delegates to the states). CALL The race within the race. States use primaries and caucuses to assign delegates to the candidates. Primary – Process is just like a general election. Caucus – “Old fashion” process, local precinct meeting precedes vote.

Phase Two July and August prior to General Election
Party Nominating Conventions held (challenging party first) Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates nominated Party Platform written Party unified and re-energized

Phase Three End of conventions to election day
General Election campaign – Party candidates square off. Televised Debates Competition for electoral votes – 270 needed to win Election Day – Tuesday following the first Monday in November Electors officially cast votes in a joint session of Congress the second Wednesday of December
