bhejire munayo 'thāgre bhagavantam adhok ṣ ajam sattva ṁ viśuddha ṁ k ṣ emāya kalpante ye 'nu tān iha Previously all the great sages rendered service unto the Personality of Godhead due to His existence above the three modes of material nature. They worshiped Him to become free from material conditions and thus derive the ultimate benefit. Whoever follows such great authorities is also eligible for liberation from the material world. 2

The purpose of performing religion is neither to profit by material gain nor to get the simple knowledge of discerning matter from spirit. The ultimate aim of religious performances is to release oneself from material bondage and regain the life of freedom in the transcendental world. Laws of religion are directly enacted by the Personality of Godhead. Except for the mahājanas, or the authorized agents of the Lord, no one knows the purpose of religion. There are twelve particular agents of the Lord who know the purpose of religion. Persons who desire their own good may follow these mahājanas and thus attain the supreme benefit. 3

mumuk ṣ avo ghora-rūpān hitvā bhūta-patīn atha nārāya ṇ a-kalā ḥ śāntā bhajanti hy anasūyava ḥ Those who are serious about liberation are certainly nonenvious, and they respect all. Yet they reject the horrible and ghastly forms of the demigods and worship only the all-blissful forms of Lord Vi ṣṇ u and His plenary portions. 4

Krishna expands Himself in two categories namely plenary portions and separated parts and parcels. Separated parts & parcels are servitors and plenary portions of viṣṇu-tattvas are worshipful objects of service. Demigods: separated parts & parcels empowered by Krsna. Separated parts and parcels do not have unlimited power like the vishnu-tattvas. One should never classify the viṣṇu-tattvas, or the plenary portions of Nārāyaṇa, the Personality of Godhead, in the same categories with the parts and parcels. If anyone does so he becomes at once an offender by the name pāṣaṇḍī. 5

Kāla-bhairava, Śmaśāna-bhairava, Śani, Mahākālī and Caṇḍikā: worshiped by those in the lowest categories of the mode of darkness or ignorance. Brahmā, Śiva, Sūrya, Gaṇeśa and many similar deities, are worshiped by men in the mode of passion, urged on by the desire for material enjoyment. Viṣṇu-tattvas such as Nārāyaṇa, Dāmodara, Vāmana, Govinda and Adhokṣaja are worshiped by those in mode of goodnes (sattva-guna). Qualified brāhmaṇas worship viṣṇu-tattvas represented by the śālagrāma-śilā, and some of the higher castes like the kṣatriyas and vaiśyas also generally worship the viṣṇu-tattvas. 6

Highly qualified brāhmaṇas situated in the mode of goodness have no grudges against the mode of worship of others. They have all respect for other demigods, even though they may look ghastly. They know very well that those horrible features of the Supreme Lord are all different servitors of the Lord under different conditions. Demigods, even Brahmā, the supreme of all the demigods, cannot offer liberation e.g. Hiranyakasipu past time. The demigods can award the worshipers some temporary benefit only, and not the ultimate one. 7

rajas-tama ḥ -prak ṛ taya ḥ sama-śīlā bhajanti vai pit ṛ -bhūta-prajeśādīn śriyaiśvarya-prajepsava ḥ Those who are in the modes of passion and ignorance worship those in the same category—namely the forefathers, other living beings and the demigods who are in charge of cosmic activities—for they are urged by a desire to be materially benefited with women, wealth, power and progeny. 8

Demigod worship not required if one is serious about going back to Godhead. (BG 7.20, 23). Never desire to increase the depth of material enjoyment. Viṣṇu worship one can derive benefit in this life as well as in life after death. For material enjoyment there is no need to approach the demigods. E.g.. Govardhana Past time. Worshiping demigods for material gain has been condemned in the very beginning of the Bhāgavatam as kaitava-dharma. Bhāgavata-dharma: only religion to be followed. 9
