Black Carbon Measurements at Whistler Sarah Hanna (UBC)
2
The Whistler Peak High Elevation Research Site Located at 50.06°N and 122.96°W and at 2182m Environment Canada (ec.gc.ca)
3
The Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) Measures refractory black carbon (rBC) in individual aerosol particles Detection limit of 0.24 fg rBC (upper limit of ~7.5 fg) Also measures scattered light at 1064 nm which can be used to determine rBC coating state Droplet Measurement Technologies (dropletmeasurement.com)
4
Black carbon mass and number concentrations 2009-2013
5
Our current focus Biomass burning periods Free troposphere sampling Free troposphere sampling when air masses had an Asian origin
6
Periods of biomass burning Local firesSiberian fires
7
Determining periods influenced by BB 1. Forest emissions are separated from anthropogenic sources using OM /(OM+SO4) (>0.7 indicates forest emissions) 2. Periods of biomass burning are further separated by the increased concentration of levoglucosan fragments at m/z 57, 60, and 73.
8
Siberian smoke event in July 2012 From July 6-8, 2012 elevated rBC concentrations were measured. There is some evidence that at least for the morning of July 8 we were sampling a plume from Siberia. Navy Aerosol Analysis and Prediction System (NAAPS)
9
Microphysical properties of local vs Siberian smoke Local smoke (July 6-7, 2012) Siberian smoke (July 8, 2012)

Determining FT and FT with Asian-origin using HYSPLIT Free Troposphere 1. January to April 2. 2000 to 0800 PST 3. 900hPa Free Troposphere and Asian-origin All of the above plus: 1. ≥ 12 hours in Asian box (red) 2. did not arrive from east of 121°W
