V ARIOUS TYPES OF POEMS ABC: every line begins with a letter of the alphabet Epic: a long serious poem that tells a story about a heroic figure Free Verse: the poet does not follow any Name: makes a poem out of every letter in a persons name Narrative: tells a story about a specific event or person Sonnet: 14 line poem typically divided in 2 stanzas

5. L ITERARY T ECHNIQUES Alliteration: the repetition of the first letter in two or more words. Onomatopoeia: a word that spells out a sound effect. Personification: giving human characteristics to an inanimate object. Repetition: Repeating a word, phrase, line, or stanza multiple times within the poem. Rhyme: repetition of an identical or similarly accented sound or sounds in a work.
