W HAT IS P OETRY ? Is a form of expression. A poets way to depict a picture or image, convey a message, or tell a story.

V ARIOUS TYPES OF POEMS ABC: every line begins with a letter of the alphabet Epic: a long serious poem that tells a story about a heroic figure Free Verse: the poet does not follow any Name: makes a poem out of every letter in a persons name Narrative: tells a story about a specific event or person Sonnet: 14 line poem typically divided in 2 stanzas

L ITERARY T ECHNIQUES Alliteration: the repetition of the first letter in two or more words. Onomatopoeia: a word that spells out a sound effect. Personification: giving human characteristics to an inanimate object. Repetition: Repeating a word, phrase, line, or stanza multiple times within the poem. Rhyme: repetition of an identical or similarly accented sound or sounds in a work.

E XAMPLES OF L ITERARY TECHNIQUES Alliteration: “Betty Botter bought some butter, but, she said, the butter’s bitter; if I put it in my batter it will make my batter bitter, but a bit of better butter will make my batter better.” Onomatopoeia: “water plops into pond splish-splash downhill” Personification: “The stars danced playfully in the moonlit sky.” Repetition: “’T is so much joy! ’T is so much joy! If I should fail, what poverty!” Rhyme: “I'm nobody! Who are you? Are you nobody too?”
