An author’s purpose is the reasons for writing, such as to persuade, inform, entertain, or express ideas. An author does not usually state a purpose for writing. Readers must use clues in the text to figure out the important ideas. Look through the theme reader to identify clues. What does the author want you to learn? Why did the author write this? What clues help you determine the author’s purpose?
