Since so many men (15 million) were off fighting, women were forced to take on new roles Over 250,000 women served in the war. Over 6 million served at home in various roles

WAVE -Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service WAC - Women's ARMY Corps WASP - Women's Air Service Pilots WAFS - Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron WAAC - Women's Army Auxiliary Corps AWS - Aircraft Warning Service Marine Corps Women's Reserve Women actually began wearing pants! The seeds of the modern Women’s Lib Movement were planted!

African Americans during the war Many moved to the North and West looking for work Mechanical Cotton Picker By 1970 ½ of all blacks lived outside the South They found some good work But still faced racism…race riots erupted (same with Mexican-Americans) The Modern Civil Rights movement began during this time. NAACP membership shot up CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) created in 1942 Many served (Tuskegee Airmen) but in segregated units
