FOREIGN POLICY 1. Foreign Policy: many different policies on many different topics a. Diplomatic, military, commercial, etc. b. President: nation’s chief diplomat

STATE DEPARTMENT 1. Secretary of State a. Advises on foreign policy b. Ranks first among presidential cabinet 2. Foreign Service a. International law: every nation has right of legation— the right to send and receive diplomatic representatives John Kerry

STATE DEPARTMENT 3. Ambassadors: represents nation in matters of diplomacy a. U.S. Embassies in more than 160 countries b. Consular offices: promote U.S. interests abroad 4. Passports: issued by gov’t to citizens who travel abroad 5. Diplomatic Immunity: not subject to laws of the state they are accredited
