Definition Propaganda: ideas or information designed and spread to influence opinion You need to be able to recognize and explain the different types of propaganda (persuasive techniques) Show an understanding of how an argument might have been strengthened by using these techniques

Type One: The bandwagon -“everybody else is doing it” puts pressure on your audience Similar to PEER PRESSURE

Type two: Testimonial (endorsement) -famous person promotes your idea -like teachers advertising a motorcycle

Type three: Glittering generalities (blank statements) - “What’s wrong with children today is they don’t listen to their history teacher.” - assumes all children don’t listen

Type four: Snob Appeal Only the best can belong to your club, tries to convince you by saying you are special

Type five: Statistics - “Nine out of ten students hate doing DGQ’s.” -uses numbers for credibility

Type six: Plain Folks - “I’m not a celebrity, I’m just like you (only smarter and better looking)!” -makes us identify with the speaker

Type seven: Name Calling - “ Mr. Chaney is only smart because he has been around for a billion years.” -makes opponent look BAD

Your assignment: Create your own World War I propaganda poster Now that you have learned the seven types of propaganda, and you have seen numerous examples of each type, you are going to create your own World War I propaganda poster: Here is what you are going to be graded on: –Meaning: Your poster must have meaning or a theme, this is the cause you are supporting –Image: Your poster MUST include a hand-drawn picture or symbol that supports your cause –Statement: Your picture must have a corresponding statement –Neatness/Presentation: Your poster should be in FINAL DRAFT FORMAT
