Fathers as Trainers Ephesians 6:1-4 – “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Fathers as Trainers Definition of Training: To develop or form the habits, thoughts, or behavior of (a child or other person) by discipline and instruction: To make (a person) fit by proper exercise, diet, practice, etc., as for an athletic performance To discipline and instruct (an animal), as in the performance of tasks or tricks. To bring (a plant) into a particular shape or position by bending, pruning, or the like

Teaching of a Father Definition of Teaching: To impart knowledge or skills Give instructions Instruct; tutor; train; educate; Inform; enlighten; school;

Teaching of a Father Deuteronomy 6:1-9 – “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house” Deuteronomy 6:20-25 – “When your son asks you in time to come saying, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies, the statues… then your shall say to your son”

Discipline of a Father Definition of Discipline: Training to act in accordance with rules; To punish or penalize in order to train and control; correct; chastise To bring to a state of order and obedience by training and control

Discipline of a Father Hebrews 12:5-11 – “no chastening (discipline) seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Proverbs 13:24 – “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.” Proverbs 29:15 – “The rod and rebuke give wisdom” Proverbs 29:17 – “Correct your son, and he will give you rest”

Discipline of a Father Example: Eli I Samuel 2:12 – “Now the sons of Eli were corrupt; they did not know the Lord” I Samuel 3:11-13 – “his sons made themselves vile, and he did not restrain them”

Conclusion Fathers are given the great responsibility of training up their children in the Lord. Ephesians 6:1-4 – “And you, fathers… bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” Proper training involves much teaching: Deuteronomy 6:1-9 – “You shall teach them diligently to your children” Proper training involves much discipline: Proverbs 13:24 – “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.”
