Where did Islam originate? On the Arabian peninsula – Mostly desert – Most people were either… City dwellers Nomadic – Herders – Traders Traders were connecting Africa, Asia and Europe

What were the religious practices of the various cultures on the peninsula? Most, except Jews, were practicing polytheism An Arabian trader, Muhammad, began to teach people about another religion – Called it Islam – Monotheistic religion When people asked him about Jesus of Nazareth and Christianity he stated that Jesus was a great prophet, but NOT the son of God

What are some of the beliefs of Islam? The beliefs of Islam are contained in their holy book called the Qur’an (Koran) Muslims (followers of Islam) also use the Sunnah as a source – Recording of Muhammad’s Life The central belief is that there is only one god named Allah That there will be a judgment day

What are some of the guidelines for Muslims? The Five Pillars – Recite the Islamic statement of faith There is one god, Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet – Pray five times a day facing the city of Mecca – Fast during the holy month of Ramadan – Give alms (money) to the poor – Make a pilgrimage at least one time to the city of Mecca Visit the Kaaba
