4 KINGDOM OF MALIKINGDOM OF MALI By the late 1200’s the kingdom of Mali had taken over Ghana. Mali’s ruler Mansa Musa, was a devoted Muslim. Musa promoted Islam throughout W. Africa and funded a university to teach the religion.

6 LATER AFRICAN KINGDOMSLATER AFRICAN KINGDOMS By the late 1400’s, two kingdoms dominated Central Africa. They often went to war just to enslave their enemy’s population. Kongo, located on the Zaire River, and its southern neighbor Ndongo waged numerous wars to capture their enemy and sell them into slavery. Europeans arrived later and the slave trade was established.

7 ABOUT ISLAMABOUT ISLAM Despite the harsh terrain of the Sahara Desert, the religion of Islam was carried throughout the region by traders, travelers, and merchants. The Koran, the book of Islam, teaches that there is one God, Allah, and that Muhammed is his prophet. Those who follow Islam are called Muslims.
