3 Now let’s have a look at this series of sights, then think about the question “what causes this terrible disaster?"

5 Look carefully at the two photos. Describe what you see in the photos. Imagine that there has been a big earthquake. Describe what might happen to all the things in the photos. Now make a list of it.

6 Roads get huge cracks.

7 Steam bursts from holes or wells in the ground. Water pipes are destroyed.

8 Houses fall down. Bricks cover the ground. Brick buildings are destroyed.

9 Factories,hospitals,buildings are gone.

10 Railway tracks are now useless pieces of steel.

11 People die and are injured. Families are killed and many children are left without parents. In a few seconds, a large city lies in ruins. Everything is destroyed. It seems the world was at an end.

12 Dams and bridges fall down. Hard hills of rock become rivers of dirt.

13 What do you think may happen before an earthquake? People can see bright lights in the sky. The sound of planes can be heard outside even when no planes are in the sky.

14 Mice will run out of the fields looking for places to hide. Fish will jump out of the bowls or ponds. Animals will be too nervous to eat.

15 Farmers’ wives will notice that the well walls have deep cracks in them. The water will rise and fall, rise and fall for a few days, steam will burst from holes or wells in the ground.
