Permanent smooth roads GeoDelft will contribute with various results from an existing national (Dutch) research programme called Permanently Smooth Roads. This project runs from 2005 until 2009, with active participation by authorities, industry (incl. SME's) and R&D. The project aims at development and demonstration of methods and tools for design and decision support that incorporate the influence of soft subsoil conditions. Both traditional road embankments and piled embankments are considered. All methods and tools are evaluated in demonstration projects, amongst which the so-called Kyoto Road. This is a quickly constructed and affordable solution for a low maintenance road. By using wooden piles and recycled material, the concept contributes to reaching environmental targets.

Permanent smooth roads The project objective is to create an international multi-disciplinary knowledge framework for road construction, focussing on minimization of lead time, maintenance, waste of building materials and life cycle costs. Suitable performance indicators will be determined for different embankment construction methods, regional soil conditions and contract types. Demonstration of the usability of methods and tools in real projects plays an important part. Stakeholders are road and railway authorities, contractors and consultants.

Sustainable Rehabilitation of Infrastructure on Soft Soils Strategy for Sustainable Rehabilitation of Infrastructure on Soft Soils; Many municipalities in the Netherlands are faced with large differential settlements of infrastructure on soft soils. Traditionally rehabilitation used to be done with sand, thus costs are low on short term, however settlement is increased resulting in long term high maintenance costs. It is hard to make a decision between traditional and alternative methods based upon optimal life cycle costing and management. Many factors have an influence and knowledge needed for decision making is not readily available in most municipalities. Also the consequences of decisions cannot be overseen. As a result costs are much too high, quality of infrastructure is not maintained properly, maintenance is overdue and much inconvience to citizens.

Sustainable Rehabilitation of Infrastructure on Soft Soils GeoDelft, 25 municipalities, utilitycompanies (SME's) and platforms take part in this project. The aim is to develop a support system for optimal decision making between traditional and alternative rehabilitation methods for existing roads based upon optimal life cycle costing and - management.

Soil-Road Network The project objective is to create a small permanent network of geo-engineering oriented top institutes, authorities (clients) and industry, that offers full so i lutions in the field of roads and railways. Stakeholders are road and railway authorities, contractors and consultants.
