2. Two Layers of Literacy Instruction Direct Instruction: daily instruction using the designated monthly theme. English Dept -Narrative Focus Science Dept Non-narrative Focus Social Studies Dept Non-narrative Focus Applied Instruction: daily application using the designated theme. All other departments infuse their content with literacy strategies.

Literacy Theme Schedule Oct: Predicting Feb: Questioning Nov: Summarizing Mar/Apr: Inferring Dec/Jan: Connecting May: Imaging The schedule above represents when the entire school will emphasize a specific strategy. Direct Instructors begin daily instruction one month before school-wide application is scheduled.

4. Literacy Training for Teachers Literacy Training for Teachers PTHS utilizes school improvement days and monthly early release days to conduct literacy trainings for our teachers. Early Release Thursdays: Each Thursday students are dismissed early to provide meeting opportunities and PLC time. Literacy Groups – once a month, groups meet to discuss the current literacy strategy. Each group is led by several direct instructors who share ideas with appliers. From time to time, we split into two larger groups of direct instructors and appliers for specialized training.
