Lampedusa Spring 2011 Huge influx of migrants in Spring 2011 – from Tunisia and then from Libya. Overwhelmed. Population 5,000 normally with influx of 15,000 refugees. (Total of 55,000 by Sept 2011) Detention centre too small. Migrants staying in port harbour offices without proper sanitation. Local inhabitants became angry – against migrants but also against government officials. The migrants could easily be housed in Italy – but not on Lampedusa. Rioting. Knock on effects on Italy and France. Governments feared opening flood gates in Tunisians admitted. Tunisians spoke French so would move to France. To find work. Governments worried about losing votes if soft on immigration. EU scale arguments Environmental impacts – migrants had not got enough toilet facilities. Left waste and litter. Cut down wood for fires to keep warm. Economic – 60% drop in tourism in summer season 2011. Tourism and fishing are the main parts of the islands economy. EU - 80 million allocated in 2010 and 2011 for repatriations LAMPEDUSA'S POPULATION SURVIVES ON THE ANNUAL INFLUX OF WEALTHY TOURISTS FROM ITALY AND ABROAD. STELLA MIGLIOSINI DEPENDS ON TOURISTS TO VISIT HER JEWELLERY SHOPS DURING THE BUSY SUMMER MONTHS. 2011 = disaster 100 million – Italy asked for this sum from the EU to manage the crisis
