1 9/9/13 Influences on Health W- What do you think you can do to lessen some risk factors in Judson Middle School? Be creative and think outside the box.

2 E- Think about the Health Triangle... Health may be categorized into three components: physical, emotional, and social. Spiritual and environmental can be added as parts to the triangle.

3 Three Main Components of Health- Physical Physical Health refers to the way your body functions. –Eats a well balanced diet. –Exercise regularly. –Avoids tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.

4 Three Main Components of Health- M/E Mental Health is the ability to recognize reality and cope with the demands of daily life. –High Self Esteem –Enjoys trying new things.

5 Three Main Components of Health- M/E Emotional Health involves coping with your feelings and expressing them in a positive way. –Expresses emotions constructively. –Asks for help when sad.

6 Three Main Components of Health- Physical Environmental Health involves keeping your air and water clean, your food safe, and the land around you enjoyable. –Has access to clean air and water. –Has a clean and uncrowded living space. –Recycles used paper, glass products and aluminum.

7 Three Main Components of Health- M/E Spiritual Health involves having spiritual direction and purpose. This includes living according to one’s ethics, morals, and values. –Has a sense of purpose in life. –Follows morals and values. –Feels a unity with other human beings.

8 Three Main Components of Health- Social Social Health is the quality of your relationships with friends, family, teachers and others. –Respects others. –Has supportive relationships. –Expresses needs to others.

9 Influences on Your Wellness Heredity Influences Social Influences Cultural Influences Environmental Influences Write down what you think each one means.

10 Taking Charge of Your Wellness 1.Knowledge-You need information to make good choices about your health. 2.Lifestyle-You can improve your health by making behavioral changes to your lifestyle. 3.Attitude-By focusing on your attitudes, you can act in ways that make you a healthier person.

12 L- What can you do??? Choose 3 to write down. Be an Advocate-To advocate is to speak out or act in support of something. Volunteer at a clinic. Take meals to the elderly. Promote health issues at school Train for a career in a health field. Set a good example through your behavior. Be informed.

13 L- Discussion Questions: 1. Where do you get your health information? 2. How can online resources help health care? How can they hurt it?

14 Read pg 8-11 Answer questions 1-6 on page 11 in a complete sentence. Turn in for grade.

15 1/29/15 TOC: Goals W- You have heard a lot about people making New Years resolutions. What are some common resolutions you have heard?

16 E- Seven goal areas Family/home Social Educational Religious Achievement/recognition Career Physical/health

17 Long vs. Short A short term goal is achieved quickly (finish term paper, wash dishes, mail Christmas cards by Friday, etc.). They help you achieve your long term goals. Long term goals will take months, years, all your life. For example: graduate from college, become a pilot, lose ___ pounds, etc.

18 Things to remember about goals: Goals must be realistic – you can’t lose 40 pounds in one month Must prioritize – rank in order of importance you, can’t accomplish it all at once. Do you have the resources you need to reach your goals (money, information, health, energy, skill, etc.). SPECIFIC! written down MEASURABLE TIME FRAME posted visibly

19 There are three types of people Ones that make things happen Those that let it happen And the ones that don’t know what happened. My Vision Worksheet- Turn in for grade!

20 L- A Mind is a Powerful Thing! Activity: The “I can’t funeral” Write down in your journal everything you can’t do. Next write a list of ‘I CAN’. Keep this in your note book/journal.

21 Directions: You will create a goal medal that will state your long-term and short- term goals. Must be neat and in complete sentences Must be colored NO Markers, unless its just to outline. Make sure name is on back of cut out medal

26 L- ½ page reflection: Write about a time in your life when you felt like you couldn’t achieve something. What did you do in order to overcome any obstacles and fulfill your goal.

27 9/10-9/12 TOC: Rudy’s Goals 1. What was Rudy’s long term goal? 2. What short-term goals did Rudy have to accomplish before he could reach his long-term goal? 3. What was the main motivating factor that pushed Rudy to try to reach his goal? 4. What were several obstacles that Rudy encountered that could have stopped him from reaching his goal? 5. If you were in Rudy’s shoes, would you be able to push past the obstacles he encountered in order to reach your goal? Why or why not?
