Math Vocab. Words Aaron Evans
2
INTEGER A whole number; a number that is not a fraction. A thing complete In itself.
3
RATIONAL NUMBER Any number that can be made by dividing one integer by another. The word comes from “ratio”
4
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION Where a number is written in two parts
5
PERFECT SQUARE A number made by squaring a whole number
6
IRRATIONAL NUMBER A real number that cannot be written as a simple fraction - the decimal goes on forever without repeating.
7
REAL NUMBERS The type of number we normally use, such as 1, 15.82, -0.1, 3/4, etc… Positive or negative, large or small, whole numbers or decimal numbers are all Real Numbers. They are called "Real Numbers" because they are not Imaginary Numbers.
8
DENSITY PROPERTY The density property tells us that we can always find another real number that lies between any two real numbers.
9
ADJACENT ANGLES Two angles are Adjacent if they have a common side and a common vertex (corner point), and don't overlap.
10
COEFFICIENT A number used to multiply a variable
11
DISTANCE FORMULA Any algebraic expression that gives the distance between two points in a particular coordinate system in a particular number of dimensions
12
DOMAIN Domain of a relation is the set of all x- coordinates of the ordered pairs of that relation.
13
HYPOTENUSE The longest side of a right triangle, opposite the right angle.
14
LEGS OF A RIGHT TRIANGLE In a right triangle, the sides opposite to the acute angles are called the Legs of a Triangle.
15
RATIONAL NUMBERS Any number that can be made by dividing one integer by another. The word comes from "ratio".
16
RANGE The range of a set of numbers is the highest number minus the lowest number
17
SLOPE The rate of change of a line. For any two points, it is the change in the y values divided by the change in the x values, and is referred to as the change in the rise over the change in the run of a line.
18
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION Where a number is written in two parts
19
PRISM A solid geometric figure whose two end faces are similar, equal, and parallel rectilinear figures, and whose sides are parallelograms.
20
SCATTER PLOT A graph of plotted points that show the relationship between two sets of data.
21
SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM the equation of a straight line in the form y = mx + b where m is the slope of the line and b is its y-intercept
