The London Tier 2 31 st Jan 2003David Colling, London Tier 2 Form a natural grouping: Geographically close so can collaborate Well connected via London MAN

The London Tier 2 31 st Jan 2003David Colling, London Tier 2 Already agreed to work together 2001: All signed up to MoU of London e-Science Consortium before the 2001 SRIF round where we agreed to make resources obtained through the 2001 SRIF exercise available to each other and to collaborate on the development of new e-science technologies. This was an agreement in principal now time to turn this into reality Technical Meeting at the end of February

The London Tier 2 31 st Jan 2003David Colling, London Tier 2 2001 SRIF These institutes allocated ~£7M to e-Science This is shared between all subjects and infrastructure etc. However HEP is a significant part of all of them. Future SRIF Most (all?) sites will be requesting funds in next SRIF round. The existence of a meaningful London Tier 2 is dependent on this. This is a real risk

The London Tier 2 31 st Jan 2003David Colling, London Tier 2 So what makes it a Tier 2? More than set of re-badged resources, although resources are important. Set of core services. London GIIS, VO services, etc Set of common management/usage policies, resources often managed NOT by HEP groups.

The London Tier 2 31 st Jan 2003David Colling, London Tier 2 So what makes it a Tier 2? Agreed support level. This depends on available people (funding from PPARC?). Core services will be 24x7. All experiments supported at all sites (within reason). Experiments responsible for the software setup and environment. Agreed management (technical and political).

The London Tier 2 31 st Jan 2003David Colling, London Tier 2 Summary Natural grouping. Already committed to collaborating. Level of resources and support depend on future funding.
