2 Grand Forks Youth Hockey Association Introduction of GFYHA Staff Mission Statement To create a youth hockey organization designed specifically to help kids reach their full potential. Fun! Fun! Fun!

3 Grand Forks Youth Hockey Parent Education Sessions O Foundation for all hockey programs is the American Development Model (ADM) O Provide information on upcoming hockey season O Help you and your child prepare for the upcoming season O Let you know where you can find information as things develop during the season O Try to answer question

4 RED, WHITE and BLUE Hockey (Termites and Mites – including 8U) O Cross-Ice games for Termites and Mites O Increase puck time and play time O Skating skills repetition - stop, start, and change directions far more often O Increase the competition - number of puck battles goes up O Reduce the time and space, increase the decision making (hockey sense) O Playing surface fits the size of our players Players that succeed at the higher levels are the ones who can play in traffic, this playing format increases the traffic!

6 Playing Surface to fit the Player A pro-size ball measures 28 inches, while a youth-size ball measures 24 inches. Field size for U-8 runs between (20yds TO 25yds) & (30yds TO 40yds) while the pro-size International field is between (70yds TO 80yds) & (110yds TO 120yds) In pro baseball, the distance from the pitcher’s mound to home plate is 60’6”, while in Little League it’s only 46 feet. Pro base lines are 90 feet while Little League the base line are 60 feet. A pro basketball hoop measures 10 feet high. Younger kids play with a hoop that’s as much as 2 feet lower. They also play cross court.

10 Steve Johnson O Your child’s success or lack of success in the game of hockey does not indicate what kind of parent you are. But, having a child that is coachable, respectful, a great teammate, mentally tough, resilient, and always tries their best is a direct reflection of your parenting.

12 Termites O 11/1/14 - 2/21/15 O Termite Coordinator – Marc Nielsen O Assistant Coordinator - ? O Termite 1 and Termite 2 O Divided by age group (recognized glitch during registration) O 7/1/07-6/30/08 = Termite 2 O < 6/30/08 = Termite 1 O First year skaters are termite 1 regardless of age O Players may be moved from termite 1 to termite 2 at my discretion O NO PLAYERS WILL BE MOVED TO MITES

13 Termites O 2 Ice sessions per week until ICON opens, then 3 ice session per week O Monday and Thursday (practice) O Saturday (games) O No off-ice sessions O 45 minutes per ice session O 40 skaters per session O Practices ADM model O Development level O Stickers will be placed on back of helmet to designate development level (3 levels) O Goal: O Allow players to compete against players of equal development level O Make teams equal

O Mite 1 and Mite 2 O First 4 or 5 ice sessions will be used to determine development level O Mite Red – less developed (NOT LESS SKILLED) O Mite Blue– more developed (NOT MORE SKILLED) O Players will be given sticker for back of helmet O NO PLAYERS WILL BE MOVED TO SQUIRTS O Practices Helmet stickers will be used within the top half and bottom half groups to group kids of similar skill levels together for station based practices. O 3 ice sessions per week O 2 practices, 1 game O Practices ADM model (45 minutes) O 45-60 minutes per session O No off-ice sessions

17 Mites O Travel program for second year mites (not red or blue) O Available to ALL second-year mite players O Birthdate 7/1/05-6/30/06 O Opt-in for additional fee O Must register with USA Hockey O 4-6 equal teams O Teams selected by Traveling Mite Coordinators (Jay Panzer and John Spicer) and Steve Johnson O Practices start upon completion of regular season O 2/1-2/15/15 Sundays only O 2/22-3/18/15 Mon/Th/Sat O Games start first part of March O Jamboree (Grand Forks) ? O Jamboree (Warroad)? O Grand Forks Classic – 3/20-3/22/15 O Coaches must be USA Hockey certified O Registration O Sometime in December O Last years fee $100

18 In-House Squirts O 11/2/14 - 2/22/15 O # of teams dependent on number of players O 1 coach and 1 assistant coach per team O Do NOT need to be USA Hockey certified O Practices O 1 hour O Thur and Sun Evening O Games O Saturday Opponents O Other Grand Forks in-house squirt teams O Squirt B teams O Northwood, Manville, Mayport, Fargo O Officials if available, otherwise coaches

20 PRIOR TO FIRST PRACTICE O Please use white tape and have your child’s name on the front of their helmet O Cut stick to right length O Standing on skates, stick should be no taller than their nose!

21 COACHES O We need a bunch! O Last year 32 different coaches contributed at the termite level! O DO NOT need to be USA Hockey certified O 6-13 coaches needed per practice session O Coach = meet volunteer requirements O Following meeting see the following individual if you are interested in coaching O Marc – Termites O ? – Mites O Steve - Squirts

22 Special Events O Jessica Sporbert will be the special events coordinator for the Termite/Mite level O Special events will include a holiday jamboree, pack the park initiative, year end event, outdoor classic, and many other events throughout the season. O Please add your name to the list or e-mail Jessica if interested in helping

23 Clothing order O Downloadable form is available on-line. O Samples will be available at the first practice O Orders are due November 5 th for a delivery in early December O Prices are cheaper than in the store for group order O 10% of all sales goes directly back to the organization

24 Volunteer Requirements O All parents will have to perform volunteer requirements O Parents who coach or volunteer to run special events will have their volunteer requirements met O All others will need to sign up for shifts at the Grand Forks Classic (shared responsibility in GFYHA)

25 How can I get involved? O Attend future Board Meetings. Dates and meeting minutes are posted on website. O Volunteer to serve on one of the committees. O Become a coach, team manager, or part- time puck-mover!
