Erik Halvorsen Telemark University College Department of science education erik.halvorsen@hit.no Water data at the GLOBE server -experience from working with the Water Cycle theme in the e-LSEE project
2
Introduction The e-LSEE group in Norway has been working with Water as the main theme. One of the reasons for this is the strong position of water in the curriculum for science in Norway. Another reason is the number of large floods in 2002.
3
Content: Water data at the GLOBE server Atmosphere Cloud observation Rainfall Solid precipitation Humidity Assessment of the data Example: Water cycle Teacher student evaluation of water data Surface Water Assessment of the data and their usefulness

Floods in 2002
5
Water data at the GLOBE server – august 2002
10
Assessment of quality and usefulness of the data Rainfall –Monthly average calculations require measurements in at least 20 days –Instruments are well designed. –My experience is that measurements are reliable –But the number of schools that are measuring rainfall is too small and scattered for more detailed investigations
11
Theme: Water cycle
12
Rainfall in september 2002
13
The connection between rainfall and flood investigated by GLOBE data
14
Results from teacher student evaluation Are the data and/or visualisations in the theme clear? Yes: 60 No: 30 Are the data and/or visualisations in the theme easy to interpret? Yes: 85 No: 5
15
Results from teacher student evaluation Are the data and/or visualisations in the theme relevant? Yes: 60 No: 30 Is the theme linked to the school curricular? Yes: 90 No: 0
16
Water data at the GLOBE server – Surface water conductivity
17
How many data are there?
26
Conclucions The number of schools that are measuring is too small The measurements are too scattered for more detailed investigations A few schools have excellent data series
