2 Essential Question? How do both sides of the abolitionist movement use religion to support their viewpoints?

3 “Necessary Evil” Thomas Jefferson described slavery as a necessary evil. What does he mean by this statement?

4 “Necessary Evil” Jefferson referred to the dilemma that slaveholders faced. Slave owners depended on slaves for income. There was also the question of what to do with freed slaves? Many slave owners argued that slaves were better off in their care than on their own. They compared the slave owner – slave relationship to the relationship between God and his followers.

5 Free Blacks Themselves or their ancestors had been emancipated
Played a leading role in abolition movement Could not vote or testify in most courts.

6 Nat Turner Rebellion 1830 Slave uprising in Virginia
75 slaves marched for 3 days killing multiple whites Turner caught, executed Whites begin to toughen up treatment of slaves

7 William Lloyd Garrison
Garrison was a famous northern journalist. He created a newspaper named the Liberator. It’s sole purpose was to promote abolition.

8 Grimke Sisters Raised by a wealthy slave owning family in South Carolina. They travelled around the north giving abolitionist speeches. Compared the condition of white women to slaves.

9 David Walker Free black, born in NC to parents in slavery.
Moved to Boston where he became active in abolitionist movement.

10 Frederick Douglass Most important abolitionist figure.
Born a slave in Maryland. Learned to read and write. Escaped to the north, wrote a autobiography.

11 Frederick Douglass Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass became a best seller. Teamed up with Garrison to go on speaking tours. Douglass’ son fought in the Civil War. Spoke at President Lincoln’s funeral.

12 Charles G. Finney Northern preacher during the 2nd Great Awakening.
Convinced many of his followers of the evils of slavery.

13 Underground Railroad Secret system that smuggled slaves to freedom in Canada People hid and offered protection to slaves at various points along journey. Harriet Tubman is most famous conductor

16 Essential Question? Abolitionists used religion to promote the moral wrongs of slavery. Slave owners used religion to promote a protective relationship of slavery.
