Requirements for wearing an SCBA
Physical Requirements Agility Facial Features Medical Mental
3
Limitations when wearing SCBA
Limited visibility Decreased ability to communicate Increased weight Decreased mobility
4
Types of breathing apparatus
Open Circuit Most common in fire service Uses compressed air Exhaled air is vented outside Closed Circuit Uses compressed or liquid Oxygen Exhaled air is processed through a “rebreather” 30 min – 4 hours
5
Parts of the SCBA Backpack Air cylinder assembly Regulator assembly
Facepiece assembly
6
Air Cylinder Assembly Low pressure 2216 psi 45cf air
30 min Low pressure 3000 psi 66cf air 45 min High pressure 4500 psi 45cf air High pressure 4500 psi 88 or 90cf air
7
Regulator Assembly Reduces pressure from tank Bypass valve
Remote pressure gauges Should be within 100 psi of tank gauge Low pressure bell
8
Weekly Inspections of SCBA per NFPA 1404 and 1500
Tank Full Gauge with in 100psi Low pressure alarm works Connections tight Face piece clean Harness good, straps extended All valves operational
9
Monthly Inspections of SCBA per NFPA 1404 and 1500
Check all components for deterioration Leaks Operation of all gauges and valves
10
Yearly Inspections of SCBA per NFPA 1404 and 1500
