4 4 Today Internet Use continues to grow exponentially Internet Technology is key to how information is shared today, both externally and within organizations Stats (Source: The High Cost of Finding Nothing, CIO Update, August 13, 2003): –Average knowledge worker spends 50% of their time looking for information –# of copies an organization makes of each document averages 19

5 5 Today Estimated economic impact: –Enterprise of 1,000 knowledge workers: 2.5M-3.5M in intellectual rework, time spent looking for info, and failing to find existing info Opportunity cost = $15M in lost revenue

6 6 Issues Security People: Learning Curves, Adaptation to new technology Rate of Technological Change No “right” answers but need standards across the enterprise NOAA’s path will be determined by efforts such as WebShop – internal drive to do work better

7 7 TOMORROW Web technology will: –Be how work is done, at all levels and throughout the organization; –Enable rapid data sharing internally and with our customers; –Allow NOAA to capture and manage knowledge; –Facilitate data and record management and archival storage.

8 8 Conclusion WebShop and similar efforts are key to sparking technological progress within NOAA. Your efforts over the next few days will give NOAA an enterprise agenda for pushing change throughout the organization. Critically important for NOAA that your efforts continue!
