3 Best Practices in Assessing Leadership Potential Determine the leadership level of the position. Is a company CEO held to the same standard as the store manager? Build a competency model. 4 Competency Models A competency model is a set of: Skills Knowledge/Qualifications Abilities Other attributes that are relevant to successful performance in a particular job.

For example, the competency model for the principal of a high school might consist of problem-solving and decision making skills, planning and coordinating skills, visioning skills, budgeting skills, delegation, ability to build relationships, ability to resolve conflict, communication skills, be a motivator, be honest, have integrity, cope with stress, have an in-depth knowledge of the higher education system, know various educational techniques, etc…

6 Measuring the Effects of Leadership Leader’s effectiveness and performance ratings. Followers’ ratings (of the leader) of satisfaction, organizational climate, morale, motivation, and leadership effectiveness. Criteria & Metrics. These are “actual” results.
