1 The Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Business, Management Accountancy and Finance (BMAF) 3rd Project Management Conference: Excellence in Teaching and Learning Thursday 13 September 2007

2 The Higher Education Academy ‘Our mission is to help institutions, discipline groups and all staff to provide the best possible learning experience for their students.’ The Academy works with: –individual staff –subject disciplines –HE departments and institutions –national policy makers

3 HE Academy Subject Centres The 24 Academy Subject Centres act as a adviser, broker and consultant, working with a diverse range of subject staff and organisations to: –provide resources –produce publications –run events –fund and undertake projects –share good practice

4 Resources and Services TRIBE - Online resources to support learning in 7 business disciplines, to be re-launched later this year Other databases - such as www.intute.ac.uk, HEA Literature Review Reference Directory www.heacademy.ac.uk Relevant projects – Links to CETL and FDTL sites External Examiner Database Enquiries - Responding to individual queries

5 Events National Workshop Programme – 12+ free workshops p.a. Student Essay Competition - £250 + chance of laptop HEA sponsored: Part-Time Lecturers’ – joint with Health Science & Practice Piloting and evaluating e-learning materials Internationalisation and Employer Engagement Building links with relevant CETLs, FDTLs

11 HEA and Professional Development The Professional Recognition Scheme is based on the National Professional Development Framework –Associate New or in support role + accredited course –Fellow Substantive TL&A role + accredited course, or Professional Recognition Scheme, or Collaborative agreement, or National Teaching Fellowship Scheme –Senior Fellow Fellow + outstanding achievement in TL&A and enhancing student learning experience, combined with scholarship and academic leadership http://www.heacademy.ac.uk/ProfessionalRecognition.htm

12 BMAF Annual Teaching Research & Development Grants Independently reviewed and assessed to establish if: it addresses an important and identified need builds on/develops from previous workj there is a clear well-structured project plan appropriate outputs and dissemination plans benefits to wider subject community are likely the proposals represent good value for money likely to be achieved within the time and budget

13 Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Current : Human Resources and Development, Accounting Education, Internationalisation, Employability, Project Management? Pending : Marketing, Entrepreneurial Learning BMAF SIG Guidelines: –Clear purpose, objectives, benefits and outcomes –Terms of reference, organisation, accountability –‘Fit’ with relevant policies & strategies –Clear methods, process, budget and project plan –Dissemination to target community and wider

14 HRD SIG Joint with and managed by the University Forum for HRD BMAF Grant matched by UFHRD for: –Literature review of best practice in LT&A in HRD –Survey of current HRD lecturers about current issues recently circulated by e-mail –Minimum of 2 SIG meetings during 2007 open to both UFHRD members and other interested staff Reporting on progress in July 07 and Jan 08 Proposal for continued funding in 2007-8 received

15 Accounting Education SIG Joint with and managed by the British Accounting Association, linked with the Committee of Heads of Accounting £5k from BMAF for: –Support for speakers to annual conference –Sponsored free places at annual conference in May 07 –Additional research bursaries for 07-08 Progress Reports in July 07 and Jan 08 Linked project developing a tool to improve student personal financial capabilities

16 Internationalisation SIG Hosted by De Montfort University, Leicester Main themes: Benefits and costs of recruiting international students Influencing and managing student expectations Assessment issues, including plagiarism & group work 2 workshops – 22 nd Nov ( Oxford Brookes ) ; then Spring 08 Conference – 13 th June 08, York St John Discussion Board via BMAF Website Progress reports in Jan 08 and July 08 Dissemination via BMAF website, publications, events
