Existed before government.  Laws – rules passed by the government; legislation  Coercion – when one man’s actions are forced to serve the will of someone else’s purpose.  Bias – to favor one thing over another in an unfair way Vocab Cont.

6. How to Answer Questions in this Class  The 5 Verbs of History you need to know  1. Summarize  2. Compare  3. Explain  4. Analyze  5. Evaluate

7. 1. Summarize  You produce a statement or paragraph that focuses on a main point or theme of an article, book, picture, etc…  Example: I ask you to summarize the main point in an article on life in the Middles Ages. You may write about different job, food, religion, disease, trade, etc… As those contribute to life in the Middle Ages.

8. 2. Compare  You identify similarities and differences between two or more things.  Examples:  I ask you to compare Basketball to Football. You may mention how points are awarded, different equipment used, etc…  I ask you to compare the Ancient Egypt with the Roman Empire. You would first determine what categories to identify such as religion, government, geography, laws, etc… Once you have the categories, you then compare.

9. 3. Explain  You investigate the causes and effects and/or the relationships(connections) between different things. Could be people, events, wars, etc….  Examples:  Why did your sports team not win a championship?  Why did the Roman Empire collapse? You will look at what things led to its demise and tell me how.

10. 4. Analyze (more difficult)  When you separate ideas and topics from something and see how they are related. You determine if something is relevant or not. You determine if something has a bias of the intention behind something.  Examples:  Bias: The only game replays on ESPN show the success of team A but only the failure of team B. The person on ESPN used to play for team A; therefore, he is biased (favors unfairly) team A.  Relating: How do the different branches of government work together to run the country? You first need to break “government” into parts like the Legislature, Judicial, and Executive. Then you have to look at what each does, and finally how they work together.

Evaluate  You are asked to make a judgement based on standards/goals.  Example: Was plan A effective based on these goals?  Example: Based on your team’s objectives this season, evaluate the strategies used. So you will look the each strategy and see if it met the objective. You will tell me whether it was effective or not.  Example: The Federal Government launched a program to get people off welfare, based on the number of people on welfare, evaluate whether this program was successful.

Time & Chronology in History  The year is 2015  To be more specific we would state that the year is 2015 A.D. or C.E.  If you were to go back in time to ancient Egypt the year might be 2030 B.C. or B.C.E.  BC – Before Christ and BCE – Before the Common Era  AD – Anno Domini (in the year of our Lord) and CE means Common Era 2015 AD7000 BC
