4 Files Versus Folders Files = Individual items that are either applications or created by applications. Typically have a file extension. Folders = Storage areas that can hold files or other folders. Typically, do not have a file extension.

6 Windows Explorer Used to access and manage files and folders (file management) Management of files and folders includes copy, move, delete, rename and modifying file attributes

7 Windows Explorer - Starting Can be accessed via the Start Menu -> Programs -> Windows Explorer Or Right-Click with mouse on Start Button and select (Left-Click mouse) “explore”

12 Creating Folders Select location for new folder in the left window From top menu select “File -> New -> Folder Type in Name of Folder

13 Copying Files and Folders Select File (or Folder) to be copied From Right Side Window (homes.xls) From Menu Select “Edit -> Copy” File (or Folder) is now saved in Clipboard

14 Copying Files and Folders (Cont.) Select Location for Copy using Left Hand Side of Explorer From Menu Select “Edit -> Paste” Copied File (or Folder) Appears in Right Hand Side Window (homes.xls)

15 Moving Files and Folders Left-Click file or folder (homes.xls) In Right Hand Window and Drag to Desired Location in Left Hand Window Book Discussed “Cut and Paste” method As Opposed to “Drag and Drop” method NOTE: Can’t drag and drop executables

16 Deleting Files and Folders Select File or Folder to be Deleted Hit Delete on Keyboard Or Right-Click Mouse and Select Delete

20 For Next Time Meet in Tahoe 1009 Bring a Labeled Diskette (Name and Social Security Number on Outside) Ignore Chapter 4 Activities – Do These Instead

21 Chapter 4 Activities 1.Create a File called “MIS1a.txt” Using WordPad on your diskette. 2.Copy the screen and paste into “Paint”. Save this file on your diskette as “screen.bmp”. 3.Create a folder called “MIS” on your diskette 4.Move “MIS1a.txt” and “screen.bmp” to the MIS Folder 5.Create a folder within the “MIS” folder called “Pictures”
