2 BELLRINGER The US Census bureau states that the percentage of nuclear families has decreased from around 40% in 1970 to around 23% in 2003. Why do you think this has happened and what might be some results that are caused by this?

3 Family Family is the basic unity of society and includes two or more people joined by blood, marriage, adoption, or a desire to support one another. There are different types of families. Couples Nuclear family Blended family Single parent family Extended families

4 How Families Help Their Members A family provides physical needs like food, water or shelter. It also takes care of mental and emotional needs. Families nurture each other by providing physical, mental, emotional and social needs. Your family helps you develop your values and beliefs.

5 Roles and Responsibilities Parents provide a place to live, food and other basic needs to their children. They are also expected to teach their children and provide love and support. Children are expected to cooperate and respect their parents. They often have chores to help support the family. A person’s role is always growing and changing throughout his/her life.

6 Building Family Relationships People from strong families feel connected and enjoy spending time together. Tips for strengthening family ties. 1. Show appreciation for each other – Thank you! 2. Support other members – help when needed. 3. Spend quality time together. 4. Communicate effectively. 5. Show responsibility. 6. Show respect. 7. Follow family rules.

7 Coping with Change Separation or Divorce Getting along with my stepparent? Moving to a new home Birth or adoption of a new sibling Job change or loss Illness or injury Death, loss and grief Discuss how to handle these situations.

8 Families If you enjoy healthy relationships with your family members, it is very likely that you will enjoy positive relationships with others.
