Health and Safety (HSAT) The following assurances come directly from the Healthy School Action Tool (HSAT) Assessment (http://www.mihealthtools.org/hsat), an online tool for school buildings to assess their school health environments. If your school completed the HSAT in the past year, you may refer back to your report to answer the following assurances. Responses to these assurances are necessary - whether you've completed the HSAT or not. These assurances are designed to help school improvement teams think about conditions for learning in their school, specifically related to student health and safety, and develop strategies in their school improvement plan to address any identified needs. School Improvement Plan: Assurances Take the HSAT! Assess learning conditions! Develop strategies! Move forward!

Completing the Assurances  Thirty-three questions  Coordinated School Health Team  HSAT completion  School Improvement Team rep  Communicates priorities

School Data Profile  Perception Data  Student  Teacher  Parent  Community  Strengths/weaknesses

So, where are we? Turn and talk.  Does your building have a system in place for gathering the necessary coordinated school health (CSH) data?  Does that data get passed on to the school improvement team (SIT)?  Do your in-house coordinated school health experts feel comfortable aiding the SIT in incorporating CSH data into the school improvement plan?

13 Do Implement Plan Monitor Plan Evaluate Plan Plan Develop Action Plan Student Achievement Gather Getting Ready Collect District Data Build District Profile Study Analyze Data Set Goals Set Measurable Objectives Research Best Practice Tying it all together…

Tying it all Together  Generate target areas/gaps  Align with academic  Objectives  Strategies  Activities

So, what does that look like?  MiPHY shows you: bullying trend, attendance issues  Academic objective states: increase writing scores  Strategy becomes: implement PBIS – get more kids engaged more of the time  Or…writing across the curriculum: health focus  Or…informational text focus: family health, PE, personal fitness, diet and nutrition

Finally (and continuously…)  Progress monitor  Revisit and revise

Objectives  Increase awareness of the school improvement process (CSI)  Increase understanding of the role coordinated school health plays in the successful implementation of that process

Working together…  “…schools could provide a critical facility in which many agencies might work together to maintain the well-being of young people.” CSHP model  Based on what you have heard today, how will you move forward with the integration of coordinated school health and school improvement in your building?  Formative Assessment (your ticket to break!): Post-It with questions 1 and 4 from blue sheet
