2  To gain proficiency in a spoken language  To COMMUNICATE with others  To gain an understanding of other cultures  To gain an understanding of our own culture through comparisons with other cultures

3  All students will be able to use a World Language in addition to English to engage in meaningful conversation, to understand and interpret spoken and written language, and to present information, concepts, and ideas, while also gaining an understanding of the perspectives of other cultures. Through language study, they will also make connections with other content areas, compare the language and culture studies with their own, and participate in home and global communities.

4  Novice –mid (characterized by word level)  Novice –high (characterized by sentence level)  Intermediate –low (sentence level +)  Intermediate –mid (strings of sentences)  Intermediate – high (connected sentences and paragraphs)  Advanced – low (paragraph level discourse at an independent level)

5  Languages connect us to other people  Speaking another language helps us to understand other cultures  Speaking another language helps with the college admission process  Speaking another language helps us to be successful in the modern workforce

6  You are a finalist on a job interview and you speak English.  You are a finalist on a job interview and you speak English AND (Chinese, French, Spanish).

7  How much of the target language will you hear in class?  About 90% of the class will be conducted in the target language at all levels, starting at level I  At the higher levels, you may hear 100% target language use  ALL STUDENTS will be required to speak in the target language

8  A student at WMRHSD must take two years of world language instruction in order to graduate  A student can take more than one language at the same time (ex., Chinese I and French II)  Studying more than one language is not confusing; it is actually easier.
