3 Below is some information about Mr. Armstrong. Two of the three pieces of information are TRUE and one is FALSE. Can you figure out which one is a LIE? 1. I was the student body president of my high school 2. Since I was your age, I’ve always wanted to be a social studies teacher 3. I played lacrosse in college

10  DO NOW: 1. Take out signed Parent/ Student contract and submit into your assigned period bin. 2. On a piece of lose leaf paper or in your journal, address the following question: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? One paragraph.

11  I would love to live in Ancient Greece. There are many reasons why I’d like to live there, including it’s home of my favorite food; the gyro. There are other aspects of Greece that appeal to me aswell. One of the attracting aspects of Greece is the geography and presence of water throughout the country. I love the warm weather and I enjoy the water even more. The presence of water also lends itself to transportation via the Mediterranean Sea, a place I’ve always hoped to visit.

12  Create a “T-Chart” on your loose-leaf paper.  Place Advantages on one side and Disadvantages on the other.  Take 4 minutes to brain storm with the people around you and list any information that applies to the advantages and disadvantages of your dream location.  Be ready to discuss your ideas if you’re called on.

13 Directions: 1. You will have 2 minutes to come up with two truths and one lie about yourself. Please write them down on the same piece of loose-leaf you completed the DO NOW on. 2. Be ready to share your truths and lie with the class in 2 minutes!

16  DO NOW: 1. On a piece of lose leaf paper or in your journal, address the following questions: a. In your own words, interpret the following quote by French Enlightenment Writer; Voltaire: “With great power comes great responsibility” b. How might this idea relate to the United States during Westward Expansion?

17  A. – This quote expresses the idea that when someone or a group of people possess a considerable amount of power, it is their responsibility that they use it correctly and not abuse it.  B. – This idea applies to Westward Expansion in American territory in a few ways. One can look at this idea and apply it to the thirteen colonies and the responsibility they now had as they moved forward in conquering new territories.

18  DIRECTIONS: With a partner, read the quote below and answer the questions that follow on a piece of loose-leaf paper…  "Our properties within our own territories [should not] be taxed or regulated by any power on earth but our own." -- Thomas Jefferson, 1774 1. What is the overall message that Thomas Jefferson is expressing in this quote? 2. Who (or what group) might be expressing an idea similar to Jefferson’s in the age of Westward Expansion? Why?

19 1. Jefferson was expressing the idea that Great Britain or the British, did not have a right to intervene and impose tariffs on land that was being operated and used by others (colonists). 2. This same idea could be expressed by American Indians during Westward Expansion. Native Americans were not receptive to the idea of a larger, more powerful group (Americans), pushing into their territory and claiming it as their own. Native Americans or American Indians were similar to colonists in that an established nation was imposing their will and abusing their power by trying to control land that ad already been occupied.

22 DO NOW: 1. On a piece of lose leaf paper or in your journal, address the following question: What do you see here? What is the message being portrayed here? Explain.

23  The image shows what appears to be some type of angel of spirit, leading or looking after a group of individuals who are on the move. Based on the geography in the picture, it appears to be “new territory.” You can also see Native American’s moving in the opposite direction of the white settlers, portraying the idea that they are being driven out or away.
