Teaching aims 1.Knowledge and skills Enable the Ss to get the gist of listening materials by catching some topic sentences. Enable the Ss to learn something about Jody Williams and Joan of Arc. 2.Process and strategies Train the Ss’ listening skills through listening 3.Feelings and Value Through the listening materials the Ss will have better understanding of the roles women play in society.

Teaching design Step1: lead-in In your opinion, maybe your mother is a great woman, but she is not a great woman to the society, what kind of woman is a great woman? Step2:warming-up Guessing game I will describe some people to you, please guess who they are according to my description. Group work: Are all the women great women? Step3: discussion Do you know a woman who really inspires (encourages) you? Describe her and explain why.

Empress Wu Zetian (624 - 705) She was the only female monarch ( 君主 ) of China. She lived in Tang Dynasty. She ruled the empire ( 帝国 ) for over half a century.

She was an inventor and a scientist from Poland. She went to Paris and studied physics and chemistry there. She was given the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911. She is the only woman scientist who was awarded Nobel Prize for two times. Madame Curie (1867-1934)

Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845) She helped improve prison conditions and gave prisoners work and education. Her work helped the Quakers get the Nobel Peace Prize in 1947. Let’s continue the guessing game.

Jody Williams (1950- USA) She helped found an international campaign to stop the use of landmines. She worked hard to make as many countries as possible agree not to use them. She and her organization were given the Noble Peace Prize in 1997

Joan of Arc (1412-1431) She was born in a village in France She dressed as a man and went to fight for the France and to drive the English out of France She was caught and put to death by the English.

Song Qingling (1893-1981 ) She was one of the top leaders on modern Chinese History. She concerned herself withconcerned Welfare projects, leading China Welfare Institute especially for woman and children. She is Dr Sun Yat-sen’s wife.

Lin Qiaozhi (1901--1983) A doctor who became a specialist in women’s illnesses. She devoted all her lifedevoted to medical work for Chinese women and children.

Jane Goodall (1934-- ),Britain She went to Africa and studied chimps. Her research showed the connections between chimps and human beings.
