Division in Islam into Sunni and Shi’a 7 th Century CE – Conflicts between Islamic groups causes great splits in beliefs. Sunni and Shi’a (Shiite) form Sunni – believed first 4 Caliphs were legitimate. Shi’a - believe Muhammad’s son-in-law (or nephew) should have succeeded him directly.
