Compounds, Elements, and Mixtures Mr. Ramirez

Chemical Element  Element: A pure chemical substance consisting of a single type of atom distinguished by it’s atomic number  Atomic Number: The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom

Chemical Compound  Compound: A pure chemical substance consisting of two or more different chemical elements that can be separated by chemical reactions  Examples of Compounds H2OH2O  CO 2  C 6 H 12 O 6  Ways of breaking down compounds  Through Heating  Through Electrolysis

Mixture  Mixture: a material system made up of two or more different substances which are mixed, but NOT combined chemically  Mixtures can be either homogenous or heterogenous  Homogenous: mixture looks the same throughout (ex: cheesecake mix)  Heterogeneous: mixture looks different throughout (ex: salad)  Mixtures can be broken down physically and do NOT need to be broken down chemically

ElementsCompoundsMixtures Pure Substance? Made of… Can be broken down?
