Chemical Element Element: A pure chemical substance consisting of a single type of atom distinguished by it’s atomic number Atomic Number: The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom

Chemical Compound Compound: A pure chemical substance consisting of two or more different chemical elements that can be separated by chemical reactions Examples of Compounds H2OH2O CO 2 C 6 H 12 O 6 Ways of breaking down compounds Through Heating Through Electrolysis

Mixture Mixture: a material system made up of two or more different substances which are mixed, but NOT combined chemically Mixtures can be either homogenous or heterogenous Homogenous: mixture looks the same throughout (ex: cheesecake mix) Heterogeneous: mixture looks different throughout (ex: salad) Mixtures can be broken down physically and do NOT need to be broken down chemically
