ORCID and Elsevier Mike Taylor Research Specialist http://orcid.org/0000-0002-8534-5985
2
My presentation Please stop me and ask questions Orcid is “just a number” Orcid is not very hard technology Orcid is philosophically, socially, culturally very challenging Orcid and me ->
3
ORCID and me I have worked with ORCID since day -1 Elsevier was on the panel when it was announced Technical Strategy Group, Technical Architecture Group, Profiling Group (etc) Co-wrote the specification for the original computer interface (API) Research project ->
4
Research project Mike Taylor is common-> How are peoples views on maintaining scholarly records changing? How is Orcid viewed by scholars? What should be stored by scholars? What are the privacy issues? Who should be in control of researcher’s identity? Mike and Eleonora Dagiene, Lithuania
5
ORCID and me – it’s personal Provider differences ->
6
ORCID and me – it’s personal Provider differences -> Me Him
7
Global data, local greatness Global challenges Because of my interest in identity, I research Scopus metadata Some countries provide excellent metadata – Japan, Brazil, Denmark Some countries provide poor metadata – China, Italy Globally, we have multiple millions of records and researchers
8
Global context, global attribution Making profiles is difficult -> In the US, there are 1,713 family names that represent 50% of the population (Family name number 1,713 = Spangler) In Korea there are three: Kim, Park and Lee. http://editorsupdate.elsevier.com/issue-37- october-2012/new-orcid-id-aims-to-resolve- authorship-confusion/
9
Making profiles is hard, expensive How we’re helping -> We use multiple factors to create author profiles, to map scholarly output There is almost nothing globally in common (not name structures) ORCID can help us even if is not complete But the growth in problem areas is significant
10
Scopus to ORCID How 4 hours makes a difference -> The first ORCID / Scopus integration Choose your articles and one-click add to Orcid Does not automatically update Orcid from Scopus Does not automatically Scopus from Orcid http://orcid.scopusfeedback.com
11
ORCID on Scopus Helping researchers -> Uses free, public API and Javascript Originally developed in an afternoon Not an expert programmer (me) Adds websites, other names, biographies to Scopus profiles Searches ORCID for DOIs and returns all the authors http://labs.elsevier.com/blog/orcid-scopus-integration-in-four-hours
12
ORCID in Elsevier Editorial Systems ORCID in Elsevier’s heart -> Elsevier has editorial submission systems and metadata systems for books, articles, etc ORCID is being added to articles next week Books to follow Three stage plan to integrate ORCID Makes submission easier – metadata, co-authors, institutions, related documents NOT COMPULSORY
13
ORCID in Elsevier Systems A smart world has connections -> Elsevier has built linked data repositories Elsevier has built centralized metadata servers ORCID being added within the year ORCID being part of our linked data within the year Commitment NOT COMPULSORY
14
A smart world has connections Standards enable connections -> Linked data APIs Mash-ups R&D Faster, better, cheaper
15
Standards enable connections What can ORCID enable? -> These standards define the rules by which we publish: ISSN ISBN DOI And ORCID is one of these – the commitment is at the highest level and runs throughout the company
16
What can ORCID enable? Projects-> Not ORCID – the organization Not Elsevier – the publisher What can an open, international scholarly identification system enable?
17
Projects OrcidLIVE!-> Sign-on to systems Authentication to use other systems Altmetrics – import works using Orcid at ImpactStory.org To generate standard letters and CVs for grant- applications To reduce form-filling
18
Last slide: OrcidLIVE! Provider dfferences -> www.orcidlive.org “Mash up” between Orcid and Googlemaps Not quite live, but a good picture of the global Orcid world To be precise: 26% of the Orcid changes from last 24 hours (privacy controls) Not a US organization Not an EU organization Genuinely global
